Senior Discount Guides: Where to Save Money at 50+ to 65+

Being older does have benefits. If you’re retired, you can do all the things you never had time for before. Go out to eat, see movies, visit museums and take that trip you’ve dreamed about. Fortunately, hitting a certain age also means you qualify for senior discounts to do those things for less money.

To help you save cash, After55.com offers these lists of senior discounts, updated for 2017. You’ll find discounts for restaurants, grocery stores and drugstores, movie theaters, hotels, and more. And, new for 2017, we’ve added senior discounts at department stores and other shops.

What Is the Senior Discount Age?

Senior discounts can kick in as young as age 50, especially for AARP members. Otherwise, you’ll find senior discounts at ages 55, 60, 62 and 65. So act your age – and start saving!

Note: We do our best to keep these lists up to date, but deals and policies can change. Confirm the current senior discount before ordering or visiting.

And remember the most important rule of senior discounts: Ask! Some retailers don’t promote their senior discount widely. Also, discounts can vary from store to store within the same chain or franchise.

Restaurants and Coffee Shops

Senior discounts at restaurant chains and franchises can range from a free beverage with a meal to 20% off any menu item. The discounts can kick in at age 50, 55, 60 or 65. So, like a fine wine, restaurant discounts for seniors can improve with age.

Movie Theaters

Movie theater chains like AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, as well as many smaller chains, offer discounted tickets for seniors. Our roundup of senior movie theater discounts offers a wide-ranging list of entertainment savings.

Travel and Hotels

Most hotels, car rental companies, and cruise lines offer travel discounts for seniors, with many savings kicking in as early as age 50. Especially with hotels and car rental companies, you may need an AARP membership for the best deal. Many museums, zoos, aquariums, and parks also offer senior discounts.

Grocery Stores and Drugstores

Grocery store chains such as Farm Fresh, BI-LO and Harris Teeter offer discounts of 5% to “seniors” as young as 55. Most often, senior discounts at grocery stores are available only on a certain day of the week, usually Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. You also may need to sign up for a special discount card. Drugstores such as Walgreens and Rite Aid offer senior discounts up to 20% one day a month.

Department Stores, Shops and Services

Bealls, Belk and Kohl’s are among the department stores that offer senior discounts of up to 15% on certain days. But those aren’t the only stores where your “silver” dollar will go further. You’ll also find senior discounts on crafts, glasses, auto services, haircuts and more. Most of these senior discounts at department stores and other shops start at 55.
