In your pros and cons chart on getting older, add at least one item to the “pros” side: senior discounts. Even as young as 50 or 55, you can use a bit of gray to save some green at restaurants, movie theaters, hotels and grocery stores.
After55.com has created these guides to senior discounts in four major categories. Bookmark this page for updates, and please let us know in the comments what other discount guides you’d like to see.
Senior discounts at restaurant chains can range from a free beverage with a meal to 20% off any menu item. The discounts can kick in at age 55, 60 and 65. So, like a fine wine – or a fine person – restaurant discounts for seniors can improve with age.
Large movie theater chains like AMC, Regal and Cinemark offer discounts at age 60 or 62 of 20-35% off the price of admission. But smaller chains such as Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, Bow Tie Cinemas and Landmark Theatres also offer senior discounts on movies, popcorn and beer!
Most hotels, airlines, car rental companies and cruise lines offer travel discounts for seniors, many as early as age 55. Especially with hotels and car rental companies, you may need an AARP membership for the best deal. To get senior savings on airfares, you may have to dig deeper online or on the phone.
Grocery store chains such as Albertsons and Kroger offer discounts of 5-10% to “seniors” as young as 55. Most often, senior discounts at grocery stores are available only on a certain day of the week, usually Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. You also may need to sign up for a special discount card.
