I lived at Jackson Square Apartments in Galveston and recommend thoroughly inspecting your actual unit and asking detailed questions before signing.

During my tenancy, I experienced recurring roaches and termites, moisture/mold concerns, building deterioration, and maintenance issues that were either incomplete or continued after being reported.

The entrance gates frequently had problems, and there were periods when I felt the property was not adequately secured. I was also charged a new $15... monthly amenity fee mid-lease without signing a lease addendum. Prospective tenants should ask for a complete list of fees and what they cover in writing.

Trash also accumulated for weeks during a disruption in trash service. I had fire/life-safety concerns because my bedroom windows were fixed and could not be opened, leaving no exterior window exit from the bedroom.

Some advertised amenities did not match my expectations. A space shown on the floor plan as a community area was being used for maintenance storage, and the pool restrooms were frequently inaccessible because they were locked from inside despite having an access code.

My experience with management was also difficult. Communication about complaints, maintenance and lease issues could be confrontational. On one occasion, management knocked rapidly and continuously on my door approximately 30–40 times until I answered, which made me extremely uncomfortable.

I also became concerned about resident privacy after learning of an incident in which a maintenance employee entered a female resident’s apartment without a work order or her prior permission in order to access electricity. The resident told me she had not authorized him to enter. Experiences like these left me uncomfortable with how resident boundaries and privacy were handled.

I was also concerned with how resident complaints were handled. In my experience, violation notices could be issued based on complaints without residents being given clear evidence or a meaningful opportunity to dispute them. I was informed that accumulating three complaints could affect lease renewal.
